Dennis Bergkamp vs Dunga: Stats Compared
Second Striker, Netherlands (born 1969, retired 2006) · Defensive Midfielder, Brazil (born 1963, retired 1998)
When Dennis Bergkamp and Dunga are mentioned in the same breath, opinions rarely stay quiet. Era matters in any comparison, and these two peaked under very different footballing conditions. By the end Dennis Bergkamp had 290 goals from 795 caps and club outings; Dunga had 60 from 687. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. The honours ledger favours Dennis Bergkamp with 10 major trophies (1× UEFA Cup (1992)) against Dunga's 8 (1× FIFA World Cup (1994)). Across the turn of the millennium and the 1990s respectively, their orchestrating and silky styles captured the spirit of very different footballing times. Club journeys add another layer, with Dennis Bergkamp reaching his representative peak around 2002 across Ajax, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Dunga doing so around 1994 with Vasco da Gama, Fiorentina, Stuttgart, Júbilo Iwata. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
