Eusébio vs Michael Owen: Stats Compared

Striker, Portugal (born 1942, retired 1978) · Striker, England (born 1979, retired 2013)

Eusébio and Michael Owen represent two answers to the same question: how do you define a great? It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. By the end Eusébio had 623 goals from 715 caps and club outings; Michael Owen had 222 from 483. Reliable assist tallies simply do not exist for large stretches of their careers, leaving creativity to the eye rather than the spreadsheet. Eusébio departs the game with 9 major pieces of silverware, including 1× European Cup (1962); Michael Owen with 8, including 1× Ballon d'Or (2001). Stylistically Eusébio was explosive where Michael Owen was predatory — two vocabularies of the same sport. Club journeys add another layer, with Eusébio reaching his representative peak around 1965 across Benfica, Montréal Manic and Michael Owen doing so around 2001 with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Newcastle, Manchester United, Stoke. Each, in his own way, set a standard the other is measured against.
