Garrincha vs Frank de Boer: Stats Compared

Right Winger, Brazil (born 1933, retired 1972) · Centre-Back, Netherlands (born 1970, retired 2004)

The Garrincha–Frank de Boer comparison is one of those fixtures of footballing folklore. Style separates them as much as statistics: two players, two unmistakable signatures. Across his senior career Garrincha notched 245 goals in 612 appearances (0.40 per game), while Frank de Boer recorded 41 in 609 (0.07 per game). Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. In major honours Garrincha collected 9 — headlined by 2× FIFA World Cup (1958, 1962) — whereas Frank de Boer amassed 8, led by 1× UEFA Champions League (1995). Stylistically Garrincha was predatory where Frank de Boer was anticipatory — two vocabularies of the same sport. Context beyond the headline totals is important: Garrincha's landmark level arrived around 1962 with a career spanning Botafogo, Corinthians, Flamengo; Frank de Boer's came around 1995 across Ajax, Barcelona, Galatasaray, Rangers. Greatness, in cases like this, is rarely a zero-sum affair.
