Garrincha vs Ian Rush: Stats Compared

Right Winger, Brazil (born 1933, retired 1972) · Striker, Wales (born 1961, retired 2000)

Ask any fan to rank Garrincha above or below Ian Rush and you will get a passionate answer. Different decades shaped different demands, and both adapted to theirs brilliantly. On production alone, Garrincha posted 245 goals across 612 appearances while Ian Rush managed 346 across 660. Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. In major honours Garrincha collected 9 — headlined by 2× FIFA World Cup (1958, 1962) — whereas Ian Rush amassed 9, led by 2× European Cup (1984, 1985). Across the post-war golden age and the 1980s respectively, their mercurial and predatory styles captured the spirit of very different footballing times. Context beyond the headline totals is important: Garrincha's landmark level arrived around 1962 with a career spanning Botafogo, Corinthians, Flamengo; Ian Rush's came around 1984 across Liverpool, Juventus, Leeds United. Rank them how you like — both names are carved into the sport's permanent record.
