Goalkeeper, Denmark (born 1963, retired 2003) · Striker, Mexico (born 1958, retired 1997)
Line up Peter Schmeichel next to Hugo Sánchez and the contrasts come quickly. It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. The raw numbers read 0 goals in 816 outings for Peter Schmeichel (0.00/game), versus 500 in 780 for Hugo Sánchez (0.64/game). Because assists were not systematically tracked for much of their time, that side of the comparison rests on the footage that survives. Peter Schmeichel departs the game with 9 major pieces of silverware, including 1× UEFA Champions League (1999); Hugo Sánchez with 6, including 5× La Liga (1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990). Peter Schmeichel played with a authoritative that made him unmistakable; Hugo Sánchez brought a ruthless that was equally his own. Club journeys add another layer, with Peter Schmeichel reaching his representative peak around 1999 across Brøndby, Manchester United, Sporting CP, Aston Villa and Hugo Sánchez doing so around 1988 with UNAM Pumas, Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, América, Rayo Vallecano, Atlante. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
