Goalkeeper, Denmark (born 1963, retired 2003) · Striker, Italy (born 1973, retired 2012)
Line up Peter Schmeichel next to Filippo Inzaghi and the contrasts come quickly. It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. The raw numbers read 0 goals in 816 outings for Peter Schmeichel (0.00/game), versus 313 in 622 for Filippo Inzaghi (0.50/game). Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. Stylistically Peter Schmeichel was reflex-sharp where Filippo Inzaghi was explosive — two vocabularies of the same sport. Club journeys add another layer, with Peter Schmeichel reaching his representative peak around 1999 across Brøndby, Manchester United, Sporting CP, Aston Villa and Filippo Inzaghi doing so around 2003 with Piacenza, Parma, Atalanta, Juventus, Milan. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
