Alan Shearer vs Fernando Redondo: Stats Compared
Striker, England (born 1970, retired 2006) · Defensive Midfielder, Argentina (born 1969, retired 2004)
There is something timeless about weighing Alan Shearer against Fernando Redondo. It is in how they played, rather than what they won, that the comparison gets interesting. Career output puts Alan Shearer at 409 goals in 733 games, with Fernando Redondo at 30 in 450. Assists were not reliably tracked for much of their careers, which makes the playmaking comparison an imperfect one; where records exist, Alan Shearer is credited with 0 and Fernando Redondo with 60. In major honours Alan Shearer collected 9 — headlined by 1× Premier League (1995) — whereas Fernando Redondo amassed 5, led by 2× La Liga (1995, 1997). Stylistically Alan Shearer was clinical where Fernando Redondo was incisive — two vocabularies of the same sport. Context beyond the headline totals is important: Alan Shearer's landmark level arrived around 1995 with a career spanning Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United; Fernando Redondo's came around 1998 across Argentinos Juniors, Real Madrid, AC Milan. Each, in his own way, set a standard the other is measured against.
