Line up Hristo Stoichkov next to Fernando Morientes and the contrasts come quickly. Where pure finishing is concerned, this is a shootout between two of the most feared marksmen of their time. By the end Hristo Stoichkov had 384 goals from 672 caps and club outings; Fernando Morientes had 254 from 530. Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. Where Hristo Stoichkov was a clinical presence in the box, Fernando Morientes offered a explosive approach to goalscoring. Club journeys add another layer, with Hristo Stoichkov reaching his representative peak around 1994 across CSKA Sofia, Barcelona, Parma, Chicago Fire and Fernando Morientes doing so around 2002 with Albacete, Zaragoza, Real Madrid, Monaco, Liverpool, Valencia. Picking between them says as much about the picker as the players.
