Striker, Argentina (born 1969, retired 2005) · Goalkeeper, Italy (born 1942, retired 1983)

The Gabriel Batistuta–Dino Zoff comparison is one of those fixtures of footballing folklore. Comparing across positions is never straightforward, and these two asked different questions of opponents. The raw numbers read 356 goals in 633 outings for Gabriel Batistuta (0.56/game), versus 0 in 734 for Dino Zoff (0.00/game). Assists were never formally recorded across most of their eras, so the playmaking dimension has to be judged on reputation and highlights rather than hard totals. In major honours Gabriel Batistuta collected 9 — headlined by 1× Copa América (1991) — whereas Dino Zoff amassed 9, led by 1× FIFA World Cup (1982). The striker duties of Gabriel Batistuta leaned predatory; the goalkeeper responsibilities of Dino Zoff leaned commanding. Their routes to the top were distinct: Gabriel Batistuta built his reputation across River Plate, Fiorentina, Roma, peaking around 1998, while Dino Zoff reached his defining level around 1982 after spells with Udinese, Mantova, Napoli, Juventus. Few pairings invite such entrenched disagreement, and fewer still deserve it this much.
